The Book

Both this CD Vol. 1 and CD Vol. 2 are accompanied by a book with transcriptions compiled by Cyril Maguire of a large number of tunes from the repertoires of Eddie Duffy and Mick Hoy, Derrygonnelly  and from The Gunn Book as well as from the memories of John McManus and Cathal McConnell.

The John Gunn book shown left is a music manuscript dating back to the mid nineteenth century. John was a fiddle teacher and lived in the townland of Corratistune, three miles from Derrylin village. The book contains around 150 tunes many of which have never been recorded previously. The book itself has been passed down in the Gunn family and is now in the safe hands of John Reihill, Inishcorkish Island. John himself is well known for his fiddle playing and singing and runs a restaurant with his wife Sheila on the island.

Here we see inside the Gunn book. Thankfully it has been well preserved and this CD breathes new life to the music being played in the county nearly two hundred years ago.
